Danzer Releases First Sustainability Report
Dornbirn, Austria, October 2015 – Hardwood specialist Danzer has released its first Sustainability Report according to the Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) reporting guidelines (core). The report covers the business year 2014 and demonstrates Danzer’s commitment to transparency, sustainability and social responsibility. The report features extensive data and examples from around the world that collectively capture some of Danzer’s key sustainability efforts and impacts. It will serve as a baseline for discussions with stakeholders and future improvements. An update of the report is planned for 2016/17.
Highlights from this year’s report include:
- Safety & health: At Danzer’s location in Africa, Ngombé, Republic of Congo, Danzer employs 23 people at the village health center; they made 9160 consultations and attended 352 live births in 2014. Mortality rate at birth in Ngombé was less than half of the national average.
- Efficient use of natural resource: Danzer made its scanned North American logs available to third parties so they can have a look inside a log before processing to increase yield and reduce waste. The capacity addition for thick-cut flooring lamellas saves up to 40% of the valuable hardwood resource, as slicing creates no sawdust, as sawing does.
- Social responsibility: Danzer spent 1.7 million Euro on social and environmental aspects in the Congo Basin. In addition, the camp of Ngombé workers receive free water and electricity, nearly 121 million liters and 1501 MW respectively. 1046 employees in Africa support tens of people for each employed.
- Ethics and compliance: Danzer revised their Code of Conduct that constitutes all key policies and procedures. The code is available in the five operative languages at Danzer (English, German, French, Czech and Spanish) and has been added to the existing Employee Handbooks.
“We believe all of these efforts help the responsible and sustainable use of the valuable hardwood resource and the people working with it or using it”, says Hans-Joachim Danzer, CEO. “Publishing this first Danzer Sustainability Report underlines our commitment to disclose company data, engage in stakeholder communication and continually improve our work.”
