Wood is a witness to time. Every growth ring preserves memories—telling stories of organic growth, climate, and environmental conditions. When a tree grows exceptionally straight, it can develop what is known as a rift grain: calm, linear structures that give spaces a sense of stability and timeless clarity. For the finishings of a luxurious Munich townhouse, a single historic oak log from Danzer became the creative starting point. From it, more than 2,400 square meters of real wood veneer were produced for doors, wall surfaces, and custom built-ins—consistently crafted “from one tree.”

A townhouse in one of Munich’s most sought-after residential neighborhoods—and an owner who creates the perfect stage for contemporary interior design with Danzer real wood veneer. From the impressive entryway and generous kitchen run to floor-to-ceiling doors, bespoke built-in cabinets, and display cases: for this luxury architectural project, the owner family chose a historic oak log from Danzer. A project where craftsmanship, design vision, and emotional materiality come together.

A material concept rooted in nature and authenticity
Planted more than 200 years ago in the Perseigne State Forest in France, oak log T418658 stands out for its particularly straight growth, harmonious rift grain, and even coloration. The clean, linear structure of the real wood surface remains subtly in the background—directing attention instead to the varied interior design, which playfully and originally mixes colors, forms, and textiles. The warm wood surfaces complement a design concept centered on authenticity and premium natural materials—from leather-upholstered seating to a bathtub made of solid travertine. Materials that are allowed to age—and in doing so, gain character.

A historic log for an interior “from one tree”
“Originally, my clients didn’t want to use oak at all,” says Oliver Thanner, managing director of the executing joinery, Tischlerei Thanner. “But then we visited the Danzer showroom near Salzburg for inspiration: my customer saw the massive French oak log, heard its impressive story—and immediately fell in love with the wood and its perfect, minimalist grain.”

A spontaneous decision—yet one carried through with real consistency. Danzer Dimension Logs—naturally grown, unique trees with a special story—are sold only as whole logs. The commissioning family therefore decided to use the veneer from oak log T418658 not only for their Munich property, but also for another building project. In total, 2,400 square meters of real wood veneer, 0.9 millimeters thick and in four different lengths, were produced from the nearly 15-meter-long tree.
By comparison: “A typical log yields 300 to 500 square meters of veneer,” estimates Oliver Thanner.

Floor-to-ceiling doors open up sightlines
Today, Danzer oak veneer doesn’t just clad walls, built-in cabinets, and display cases in the representative Munich residence. It was also used for floor-to-ceiling pivot doors, which the Thanner team installed flush with the walls: “For all cabinetry, we deliberately reduced horizontal joints—creating an overall look that feels clean and composed,” explains Oliver Thanner.
“On the doors, the veneer—and therefore the tree’s grain—runs across the entire door leaf. The tree remains tangible as a whole. The rooms feel unified and harmonious, as if cast from a single mold. And visitors’ attention stays focused on the high-end interior.”

Natural materials set within a garden landscape
The oversized doors and wall surfaces allow for nearly open floor plans when desired, connecting rooms and creating generous sightlines that let the architecture breathe. Large windows frame views of the surrounding garden—forming a compelling connection: the wood surfaces inside echo the trees and shrubs outside.

Calm wood walls, vibrant parquet
A deliberate contrast is created by the restrained oak wall surfaces and the simple floor milled in free-form shapes. With the highest level of craftsmanship, a custom installation was produced: seemingly random geometric forms interlock with mosaic-like precision. A play of order and movement. Selected areas also feature real wood veneer made from figured poplar, whose distinctive knot structure adds targeted accents. Here, too, Danzer oak veneer remains the quiet anchor of the overall concept.

Timelessly beautiful material, a comfortable interior atmosphere
“The wood surfaces make up a large portion of the visible area—and therefore contribute significantly to the harmonious, high-end overall impression of the home,” says Wolfgang Irlacher, Danzer Sales Manager. “Timeless material, attractive rift grain—these elements create a pleasant sense of comfort. You don’t simply get tired of looking at wood. Instead, it helps ensure that residents enjoy their interior design for a long time.”

Durability as the core of sustainable building
Oliver Thanner agrees: “The quality of the material and the craftsmanship are immediately tangible in my clients’ rooms. A wood like this deserves appreciation. My aim is to create something lasting: furniture and wall surfaces that can still bring joy in 100 years. Because that kind of longevity is the true core of sustainable building.”

One of the clients summed up this mindset perfectly when she wrote: “I’m very much looking forward to being able to use your furniture.”

Wood connects past and future
A centuries-old tree from western France. A thoughtfully designed interior concept. Together, they form the foundation for a timelessly modern townhouse in Munich.

Danzer oak veneer tells a story of origin, craftsmanship, and the past. Its future, however, is created in the everyday lives of the people who inhabit these rooms—bringing exceptional interior architecture to life day after day. Wood is more than a material. It connects then and now—and builds bridges between generations.

Project Facts

Projekt: Casals Forum

Location: Kronberg, Germany

Year of completion: 2022

Client: Kronberg Academy Foundation, Kronberg, Germany

Architects: Staab Architekten, Berlin, Germany

Surfaces: Knauf Design, Wolpertshausen, Germany

Acoustic consultant: Martijn Vercammen, Peutz Group, Düsseldorf, Germany

A concert hall like a wooden treasure box: With the Casals Forum in Kronberg (Taunus), not only has a new center for chamber music been created, but also a strong architectural statement. Realized with oak veneers from Danzer, the Casals Forum unites sound, architecture, and materiality—creating an unforgettable cultural and artistic experience.

The design by Staab Architekten from Berlin combines transparency with organic form. The pavilion-like building structure houses a central concert hall, which architect Prof. Volker Staab describes as a “wooden treasure box.” Characteristic features include gently curved convex and concave wall surfaces clad in oak veneer. These surfaces distribute sound evenly throughout the space while defining its architectural expression.

Wood Enhances the Musical Experience
For the concert hall interiors, the Kronberg Academy Foundation selected a gypsum fiberboard panel veneered with real wood from surface specialist Knauf Design. The panels of the “Oak Select” type combine acoustic performance with sound insulation and fire protection. For the matching face and backer veneers, Knauf Design commissioned its long-standing partner Danzer.

“Working with real wood means creating an experience,” says Gertraud Storz, Director Specification Sales at Danzer. “Our goal is to create spaces that inspire visually and resonate emotionally.”

From Veneer Strips to a Coherent Overall Concept
For walls, ceilings, and balustrades, Danzer supplied customized veneers: approximately 4,500 square meters of face veneers and 3,500 square meters of backer veneers made from European oak. Hand-selected for Knauf Design’s real wood collection, the veneer surfaces feature a calm, plank-like appearance.

“Veneer is usually supplied in narrow strips,” explains Mario Reiß, project manager at Danzer’s Raspenava site in the Czech Republic. “For the Casals Forum, we joined the veneers into project-specific raw formats—and delivered them cut to size.”

Form Shapes Acoustic Quality
To achieve perfect acoustics, the project partners collaborated with acoustic consultant Martijn Vercammen, who also optimized the acoustics of the Berlin State Opera. Movable wall panels—so-called ‘rotating wings’—allow the hall’s acoustics to be flexibly adjusted, from intimate solo performances to larger chamber orchestras.

The panels, veneered on both sides with oak, feature one smooth and one perforated surface. Depending on the orientation of the wings, the room’s acoustic character changes.

Prof. Volker Staab, founder of Staab Architekten, explains: “Our collaboration with Danzer was characterized by intensive, iterative exchange. Since spatial perception and acoustics depend heavily on the wood surfaces used, it is essential that the partner can respond flexibly to design and technical adjustments.”

Precision Work for Visual Harmony
One of the greatest challenges was selecting visually homogeneous veneers: “In the midst of the COVID pandemic, we had to choose veneers from different production batches and logs,” says Mario Reiß, Danzer Sales Manager Spliced Faces Europe. “Matching the veneers visually and in terms of color was crucial to achieving a consistent appearance throughout the entire space.”

Gertraud Storz adds: “Wood is a natural product. Yet our customers expect the veneers to match the sample. Thanks to our network and expertise, we were able to meet this expectation.”

Spaces That Move People
The result of this inspiring collaboration is a concert hall that makes music not only audible, but tangible. “The project impressively demonstrates what wood can achieve,” says Mario Reiß. “It’s not just about design—it’s about atmosphere: warmth, haptics, comfort. Even in a large space, an intimate musical experience emerges.”

Prof. Volker Staab adds: “The wood surfaces create a warm yet refined atmosphere. The convex and concave wall panels contribute to optimal sound diffusion, resulting in a space that is convincing both acoustically and visually.”

A Timeless Connection: Wood Meets Sound
With the Casals Forum, the Kronberg Academy Foundation continues a long tradition: the combination of wood surfaces and classical music. “Wood has been used in instrument making and concert halls for centuries,” says Prof. Volker Staab. “Its natural grain and warm color create a sense of comfort. In addition, wood reflects and scatters sound in a way that makes it warm, full, and vibrant.”

The Casals Forum project once again demonstrates Danzer’s material expertise and collaborative approach. Gertraud Storz sums it up: “Our goal is to find the right wood for every application. In the end, it’s about bringing the client’s vision to life—together.”

It has decided to use “Objectives and Key Results” as a tool (OKR). OKRs address the two critical conditions of any goal worth fighting for: the “WHAT” and the “HOW.” Objectives (Os) are WHAT you aim to accomplish. Key Results (KRs) tell us HOW we’ll get the O done. Os are significant, action-oriented, durable, and inspirational. KRs are specific, timebound, aggressive, realistic, measurable and verifiable.
At mid-year, the Danzer’s OKR teams assessed progress and found impressive results projected for the end of 2024, compared to 2023. The results show the teams beating their goals in many cases:

Carbon Reduction Objective: reduce petrol & natural gas consumption by 5% and electricity use by 10%, and the results:

< 26% natural gas (<76.9 t CO2eq)
< 9% petrol (<217.4 t CO2eq)
< 15% electricity (<1,941 t CO2eq)

Injury Reduction Objectives: reduce injuries of the type “lacerations” or “strains/pulls” and of the cause “slips/falls” by 50%. At mid-year, we see the following results:
11 injuries of this type, compared to 19 by end Q2 ’23, or 42 at Q4 ’23

Conserve Water Objective: reduce water consumption per m3 produced by 15%.
Danzer-wide we measured the following: Overall consumption is down by 32%

Zero Plastic Objective: the goal to eliminate individual drinking water bottles (distributed by Danzer to employees) achieved, the remaining goal was to reduce wrap and straps per m3 produced by 20%. Overall we achieved the following reduction:

< 57% kg/m3

The Board of Directors of Danzer was pretty much impressed with these very tangible results. At Danzer, we set meaningful objectives, put our mental and physical resources behind it, and get things done to better our surroundings.

Can trees tell a story? Can veneer create an emotional connection to historical times and places? At Danzer, we believe they can! Let us look at the story of a remarkable white oak tree. A story, that is also a great example of what we value at Danzer.

Can trees tell a story? Can veneer create an emotional connection to historical times and places? At Danzer, we believe they can! Let us look at the story of a remarkable white oak tree. A story, that is also a great example of what we value at Danzer.

Once upon a time, there was a white oak tree …
In the heart of Potter Park Zoo in Lansing, Michigan, stood a majestic white oak tree. For 154 years, its branches stretched toward the sky, bearing witness to monumental moments in American history.
Planted around 1870, this tree observed the Reconstruction Era, the rise of industrialization, and landmark events such as the passage of the 15th Amendment granting African American men the right to vote. It even stood through the invention of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876.

But this white oak didn’t just witness history—it became part of the zoo’s story and landscape, providing shade and beauty for generations of visitors and animals alike.

A difficult decision
As Potter Park Zoo expanded, plans for a new Animal Health Facility conflicted with the tree’s location. Despite its significance, the tree had to be logged to make way for the clinic. However, this wasn’t the end of its story. Instead, it marked a new chapter—when Danzer Veneer Americas (DVA) stepped in. Through a trusted tree service provider we regularly collaborate with, we were able to purchase the tree. We then bucked the log to produce high-quality, historically valuable rift veneer, preserving the tree’s legacy in the process.

One project, three core values
The white oak project isn’t just a reflection of history; it’s a testament to our commitment to sustainability, craftsmanship, and uniqueness. Here’s how it embodies three of our core values at Danzer:

Value #1: Sustainable sourcing and processing
Sustainability lies at the heart of everything we do: The white oak project showcases this. By producing thin-sliced veneer from the historic white oak tree, we created decorative surfaces covering approximately 50,000 ft²—a much larger area than could be achieved with solid lumber. This efficient use of natural resources aligns with sustainable forestry principles, ensuring that every part of the tree contributes to something meaningful.

By providing geolocation data for our logs, we are already ensuring compliance with the planned EUDR regulations while promoting transparency in our sourcing practices. The white oak tree exemplifies this principle perfectly: Danzer always knows where our trees come from.

Beyond these technical achievements, the project also created a positive community impact: proceeds from the sale of the white oak tree partially funded Potter Park Zoo’s new animal hospital. At the intersection of sustainability and social responsibility, thoughtful wood processing can benefit both nature and society.

Value #2: Quality of materials and craftsmanship
Skilled specialists carefully bucked the white oak tree into three logs lengths at our Edinburgh, Indiana facility. One of them, with its rare 41-inch diameter base, showcases the tree’s remarkable size and exceptional quality.

The resulting rift veneer reflects over 150+ years of history, with unique grain patterns shaped by the changing conditions of climate and environment. Danzer’s exceptional craftsmanship ensures the material meets the highest standards of quality and durability, ideal for premium applications.

Value #3: Uniqueness and Exclusivity
It is a rare occasion that Danzer gets to work with a tree that has grown over such a long time: The white oak tree is a living witness to one-and-a-half centuries of American history. Its veneer captures a spirit of resilience, transformation, and organic growth.

Danzer is now seeking a project that honors the tree’s legacy. We are looking for a project partner who will proudly showcase the tree’s story at the site of use, creating a meaningful connection to its heritage and the past.

The white oak story continues
Through sustainable practices, meticulous craftsmanship, and an appreciation for the unique, we at Danzer preserve the stories nature offers us. The white oak may no longer stand at Potter Park Zoo, but its story lives on in every single veneer sheet we produce. As a leading manufacturer of decorative sliced wood, we at Danzer help to blend historical wood with state-of-the-art applications, creating unique spaces where past and present meet.

Unlocking AI’s Potential in Hardwood Processing

AI is transforming industries at an unprecedented pace – and the hardwood sector is no exception. Given the unique challenges of hardwood processing, one of the key questions we at Danzer have been asking is: Can AI truly unlock new efficiencies in our field?

AI is transforming industries at an unprecedented pace – and the hardwood sector is no exception. Given the unique challenges of hardwood processing, one of the key questions we at Danzer have been asking is: Can AI truly unlock new efficiencies in our field?

As an internationally operating hardwood company, we have invested heavily in technology, digitalization, and artificial intelligence over the past 15 years. Hans-Joachim Danzer, CEO of Danzer AG, has shared our observations on the current practice and practicability of AI in the hardwood industry. As an invited speaker at the 44th Winter Colloquium of the University of Freiburg, he contributed to an engaging scientific exchange centered around the question: “AI in Forestry and the Wood Industry – Hype or Game-Changer?”

Hardwood Is Valuable – and Demands the Best Processing Technology
In his introductory remarks, Hans-Joachim Danzer explained why the hardwood sector is particularly well-suited for AI-driven optimization. Two key factors make this industry stand out: Firstly, hardwood has extremely valuable raw materials. Secondly, hardwood industry is highly fragmented at all value chain steps. Thus, high costs and complex processing steps could profit from smart solutions to maximize yield. However, while AI offers enormous potential, the reality of hardwood processing is more nuanced.

The First Processing Step: Not AI-Ready Yet
One of the first steps in hardwood processing is assessing wood quality. To explore AI’s potential, Danzer operated a CT scanner for over a decade, analyzing the internal structure of logs. This firsthand experience revealed significant technical and economic limitations for CT scanning in hardwood applications.

Why CT Scanning Falls Short for Hardwood Processing

Aesthetic qualities (grain pattern, texture, color) are not density-dependent, making CT scanning ineffective for veneer and premium lumber.

Industrial feasibility is limited: The trade-off between high investment costs and low throughput makes CT unviable for large-scale hardwood processing.

For sliced veneer, CT scanning lacks the necessary granularity to accurately detect decorative features.

For lumber, implementation is impractical because existing sawmill equipment lacks the precision to execute AI-driven cutting solutions.

While AI’s impact at this stage is still limited, Danzer remains committed to tracking technological progress and exploring future applications that may one day make AI viable for the initial assessment of wood quality.

AI in Action: On the Way to Customer-Specific Mass Production
Where AI already proves highly valuable is in the mass production of customer-specific formats and qualities. Hans-Joachim Danzer revealed that the company has developed its own scanner, capable of detecting wood defects based on pattern recognition. This breakthrough makes quality assessments far more efficient.

Moreover, Danzer’s wood specialists have designed optimization algorithms that allow each flooring lamella to be cut into customer-specific formats and qualities – aligned with the current order book and optimized for value.

One key realization in this process: While human operators struggle with increasing product variations, AI thrives on complexity. With AI, Danzer can produce custom-fit top layers for the parquet industry, maximize raw material usage, and reduce waste – a significant contribution to our sustainability strategy.

AI in Sales: The Challenge of Digitally Representing Hardwood
At the end of the supply chain, the use of AI presents a new set of challenges, which still needs to be analyzed in more detail. Hardwood possesses qualities that easily get lost when applying a digital only strategy in sales:

The tactile experience of hardwood is irreplaceable – No digital screen, no matter how advanced, can replicate the feeling of running your hand over a deeply grained veneer and experiencing its warmth.

Visual limitations – Certain light reflections, depth, and richness of appearance cannot be fully conveyed through digital images.

The emotional aspect of purchasing – Choosing a customized veneer for your home is a deeply personal and emotional experience. The process should remain inspiring and immersive.

“Perhaps for highly standardized products, digital sales could be a viable option,” concluded Hans-Joachim Danzer, hinting at the active development and testing Danzer is currently conducting. The company is gathering real customer feedback to explore how AI could refine or complement the B2B sales process.

Beyond AI: Driving Industry Progress
Innovation never happens in isolation. That’s why Danzer actively engages with the scientific community, partnering with universities, researchers, and AI experts. The discussion at the University of Freiburg was more than just an academic exchange – it also provided an opportunity to gather feedback on Danzer’s latest initiatives.

Advocating for Transparency: The “Wood4Real” Campaign
At one point during his lecture, Hans-Joachim Danzer paused for what he called a "commercial break." This humorous interlude set the stage for a serious topic: Through the "Wood4Real " campaign in Brussels, Danzer is advocating for imitation materials like chemically impregnated paper, vinyl, or melamine to be honestly labeled for what they are. The audience responded with enthusiastic applause, signaling widespread industry support for this transparency initiative.

EUDR Readiness: A Competitive Advantage
Hans-Joachim Danzer also highlighted another crucial issue: Being prepared for the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is not just compliance – it’s a competitive advantage. By ensuring full traceability and responsible sourcing, Danzer is proactively securing the industry’s future—while clearly distinguishing the wood sector from the primary drivers of deforestation: food and meat production. Hans-Joachim Danzer’s statement was met with applause from the audience again, highlighting the industry's shared commitment to sustainability and transparency.

Leading the Way Forward
By combining cutting-edge AI applications, EUDR readiness, and advocacy for industry transparency, Danzer is not just keeping up with trends – it is defining them. With its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and collaboration, Danzer is paving the way for a smarter, more sustainable, and more transparent future for hardwood.

How Your Next Hardwood Project Can Benefit From Our AI Strategy
Want to learn how Danzer’s AI-driven approach can optimize your next hardwood project? Let’s talk!

When does a company thrive? When its people thrive, of course! This is one of our core beliefs at Danzer – and the foundation of our sustainable success. Just as strong roots ensure a tree’s longevity, a healthy workplace lays the groundwork for long-term value.

We are delighted that our commitment to workplace health promotion has now been officially recognized. At a ceremony in Salzburg, Danzer Veneer Europe was awarded the prestigious BGF Quality Seal for the period 2025 to 2027

This certification marks an important milestone in our continuous efforts to foster a healthy work environment. BGF stands for Workplace Health Promotion (“Betriebliche Gesundheitsförderung”) and is awarded by Austria's largest social health insurance provider ÖGK (“Österreichische Gesundheitskasse”) in collaboration with Austrian Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care, and Consumer Protection as well as Health Austria GmbH and Healthy Austria Fund.

Why Workplace Health Promotion Matters to Us
At Danzer, we view workplace health promotion as an essential part of our ethical responsibility as an employer. Our health initiatives are deeply rooted in our corporate values , employee-centricity, long-term commitment, responsibility, innovation, and excellence. They also align with the Danzer Code of Conduct, which explicitly addresses people’s rights as well as health and safety standards.

“By continuously investing in health initiatives, we create a long-term framework that supports the physical, mental, and social well-being of both employees and executives,” says Ulrike Mühlbacher, responsible for Finance & HR at Danzer Veener Europe in Grödig. “Workplace health management is also a powerful tool for strengthening communication and team cohesion, which in turn boosts employee satisfaction.” Danzer’s goal is to foster team motivation and reduce absences or sick days.

What Measures We Have Taken
At Danzer, workplace health management is not a one-time initiative—it’s a comprehensive and ongoing commitment. Like a well-crafted piece of woodwork, every detail matters. Our approach focuses on three key areas:

#1 Personal Health-Related Seminars

We offer a variety of health-focused programs, including:

Smoking cessation seminars to support employees in quitting tobacco use.

Healthy nutrition courses to encourage balanced and informed dietary choices.

First aid courses to equip employees with essential life-saving skills.

BIA measurements (“Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis”)for body composition analysis, helping employees track their physical health.

Fire extinguisher training to enhance workplace safety awareness.

Back fitness classes to improve posture and prevent back pain caused by prolonged sitting.

#2 General Workplace Improvements

“A healthy workplace goes beyond seminars—it also includes spaces that foster relaxation and interaction”, says Ulrike Mühlbacher from Danzer Veener Europe. To enhance well-being, Danzer has introduced a relaxation room with lounge chairs, giving employees a quiet space to unwind. We also put up a public foosball table (“Tischkicker”) encouraging social interaction and providing a playful way for stress relief during breaks.

#3 External Health Consulting

To gain fresh insights and expertise, Danzer also collaborates with AUVA, Austria's largest accident insurance provider (“Allgemeine Unfallversicherungsanstalt”). The partner offers ergonomic consulting, ensuring that workstations and workflows are designed to prevent health issues and support long-term well-being of Danzer’s employees

What Our Employees Say

Our workplace health initiatives have been met with overwhelmingly positive feedback from employees. “These programs are not only being used but are also highly valued,” says Ulrike Mühlbacher. “They actually reinforce our belief that investing in workplace health increases employee engagement, satisfaction, and retention.” The enthusiastic responses motivate Danzer to continue making employee well-being a top priority.

Looking Ahead: A Lasting Commitment to Health and Well-Being

The BGF seal is valid from 2025 to 2027 – but our commitment to create healthy workplaces goes far beyond that. Aligned with our core values, sustainability, innovation, and excellence, we are shaping a healthier, happier, and more productive workforce.

Beyond its internal impact, workplace health management also plays a key role in external communication. “It strengthens our employer branding strategy and positions us as an attractive company in a competitive labor market,” says Daniel Lechner, Head of Marketing at Danzer AG. Workplace health management truly creates a win-win situation: good for employees, good for Danzer. Because only together we can truly thrive. Or, as we say in the hardwood industry: develop roots and grow.
