High-quality hardwood veneers by Danzer and the luxurious interiors of Viking Yachts have formed a natural alliance since 2015. For more than a decade, Danzer has supplied Viking Yachts with carefully selected walnut logs – a relationship built on trust, material expertise, and uncompromising quality standards. As a manufacturer of high-end yachts, Viking relies on exceptional decorative veneers to create interiors that balance craftsmanship and quiet luxury. Over the years, innovation and co-creation have come to play an important role in both companies’ collaboration.

The island of Maui is a surfer’s paradise. Consistent wind and wave dynamics and legendary surf spots attract surfers from around the world. This unique energy became the inspiration for Danzer’s MAUI 3D-Feature. As fluid and dynamic as the Pacific Ocean surrounding the Hawaiian island, the MAUI feature translates natural movement into a sculptural, three-dimensional hardwood veneer. Viking Yachts was the first customer to integrate the MAUI feature into a Viking 90 sportfishing yacht. It is used as a distinctive headboard element in the stateroom, introducing depth, rhythm, and a sense of calm to the interior.

Material selection as a shared ritual
Viking Yachts’ decision to embrace Danzer’s innovative wood feature is no coincidence. Since 2015, the hardwood specialist and the luxury yacht builder have worked closely together, united by their appreciation of hardwood and long-term thinking: Periodically, Viking Yachts’ John Piper visits Danzer’s Darlington showroom. As Manager of CNC Programming Operations and Production Materials Manager, he personally selects from the finest walnut logs. Since the beginning of the collaboration, Danzer has supplied more than 150,000 square meters of finest walnut veneer for Viking Yachts.
“A warm walnut tone, logs without flares or defects: Viking Yachts needs high-end walnut veneer for its boats’ interior design,” says Fernando Zertuche, Sales Manager at Danzer Veneer Americas. “Furniture, cabinetry, and walls are basically the first things Viking’s customers see when they enter the boat. So, the very first impression has to be of high quality.”

One yacht. One visual language.
Another key advantage of this long-standing partnership is material precision: Danzer is able to match the size and characteristics of each walnut log to the specific interior areas of the yacht being built. By carefully selecting and matching logs, Viking Yachts can achieve visual continuity across larger interior spaces, while individual staterooms can often be veneered from a single log. The result is a harmonious interior language defined by material consistency, visual calm, and understated sophistication.
During one of these showroom visits, the Viking Yachts representative encountered Danzer’s newly developed 3D-Features for the first time. The organic forms and sculptural surfaces immediately sparked curiosity. John Piper was intrigued by the possibilities and wondered how such complex shapes could be achieved with wood – a natural reaction, given that for many years bending and forming wood veneers was possible only within narrow limits.

A deliberate design statement
Danzer’s 3D-Features technology opens up new possibilities for designers: an innovative process allows veneer to curve and form shapes that are otherwise unachievable with standard veneer. Edges, layers, and varying grain directions emerge across the surface, giving each veneer its characteristic three-dimensional depth – lightweight, elegant, and structurally stable all at once.
Viking Yachts was presented with a curated selection of 3D-Features samples in different wood species and ultimately chose “fumed oak” from Danzer’s Vinterio series – a technical veneer made from hardwood lumber components – glued into a solid beam and sliced perpendicularly to achieve a “plank effect”. The “fumed” look with its dark tone creates a deliberate contrast to the yachts’ lighter walnut interiors, allowing the MAUI feature to stand out as a sculptural statement.

Wood in three dimensions
“The wave-like MAUI design reflects the movement of the ocean outside and brings it into the boat’s interior,” explains Daniel Lechner, Head of Marketing at Danzer. “At the same time, it enhances the calm atmosphere of the space, creating a sense of retreat after a day at sea.”
“With our 3D-Features, we demonstrate what wood is truly capable of,” adds Sales Manager Fernando Zertuche. “Wood is no longer limited to two dimensions. It becomes a sculptural element in the Viking 90’s stateroom.”

Innovation that extends beyond the yacht
The collaboration extends beyond the yachts themselves: At Viking Yachts’ headquarters, additional Danzer solutions showcase what is possible when material expertise meets custom thinking. The Viking reception desk made with Walnut Linea prominently features Danzer Freeform/Beaufort aluminum inlays – an industrial process that enables the precise integration of metal into wood surfaces, once only achievable through labor-intensive craftsmanship.

A statement piece at the heart of decision-making
For the Viking boardroom, Danzer created the middle section of a representative conference table crafted from Nautical veneer, a technical solution made with walnut and sycamore. At its center, the Viking Yachts’ corporate logo is highlighted: The oversized aluminum inlay bears Viking Yachts’ logo, made possible by Danzer's proprietary technology. A work that reflects both technical ingenuity and ambition.
“We don’t limit ourselves to standard solutions,” explains Danzer’s Fernando Zertuche. “Even when a request presents a challenge or goes beyond our existing capabilities, our first response at Danzer is not to say ‘no’. Instead, we communicate openly and work together to develop custom solutions that genuinely meet our clients’ needs.”

Inspiring personalization through material storytelling
Today, the Viking reception desk and boardroom table serve not only as visual statements for visitors, but as tangible proof of Viking Yachts’ expertise in hardwood interiors. The exhibits inspire Viking’s customers to personalize their own yachts: “It opens up a wide range of possibilities,” says Fernando Zertuche. “For example, incorporating an owner’s name as a metal inlay is one way to further personalize a yacht.”
Deep material knowledge, technological precision, and a shared commitment to craftsmanship define the collaboration between Viking Yachts and Danzer. Together, these elements create distinctive luxury interiors whose quality can be seen and felt at first glance.
