Our Planet is Just as Important

Our products are only beautiful if we preserve the world in the process. Future generations are depending on us, and we don’t take that lightly. Danzer helps protecting the environment e.g.

  • Making every effort to find the best use for each piece of raw material,
  • Producing close to the resource
  • Reduced impact logging

Making more out of wood

Danzer is investing in technology to extend the valuable resource – and to supply a better product for its customers. One example is the curve saw at Danzer’s saw mill in Bradford, Pennsylvania. This new saw is able to follow the natural direction in a log and can produce flat boards even from crooked logs.

Many, many innovations were created at Danzer over the decades (many are also protected by patents) that were geared to improve the use of wood: trying to preserve as much of the valuable resource for high-value applications as possible.

Local production

Danzer is committed to producing close to the resource. Danzer production sites are located accordingly. The benefits for the environment are manifold: Transportation of the bulky raw material is minimized. Being close to the area of origin of the raw material makes it easier to discern material from responsible sources. The local communities benefit from both, using the natural resource in their area and participating in the economic value-add at Danzer mills and at local suppliers and contractors.

Reduced impact logging

Resource efficiency in hardwood production starts in the forest. When it comes to logging, there are ways to minimize the environmental impact of the timber harvest on forest stands and soils.
Danzer trains its people and contractors in reduced impact logging. It involves a number of practical measures including:

  • Pre-harvesting planning of roads and skid-trails to minimize soil disturbance
  • Directional felling, i.e. cutting trees so that they fall in a specific direction, which minimizes impacts to the rest of the forest
  • Cutting stumps low to the ground to avoid waste and careful skidding of the logs
